Pace Coach is an iPhone app made by Denny Wijaya, an independent developer in New Zealand. This page explains what the app keeps on your phone, what it sends off it, who receives that, and why. "I" and "me" below means the developer.
While a run is active, Pace Coach reads your GPS position, including in the background when the screen is off, to measure distance and pace. The coordinates are used on the device to calculate your numbers and are never uploaded. Location is only read during a run you start yourself.
Every finished run is saved in a database on your iPhone: date, distance, duration, average pace, target pace, per-kilometre splits and the AI recap text. There is no cloud copy, so deleting the app deletes this history permanently.
The voice cues you hear while running, such as "pick it up" or your kilometre split, are generated on the device. Nothing is sent to produce them.
Sent to PostHog
To understand how the app is used and where it breaks, Pace Coach sends short usage events to PostHog, an analytics service hosted in the United States:
Some of these events include run numbers: the goal distance, target pace, and for a completed run the distance, duration and average pace. Each event carries a random ID created when you install the app. It is not linked to your name, your Apple Account or your device's advertising identifier, and it is replaced if you reinstall. PostHog keeps these events for up to one year.
Sent to my coaching service, then OpenAI
After a run, Pace Coach can write a short recap of how it went. To do that it sends text describing the run to a small coaching service I run on Cloudflare, which passes it to OpenAI to write the recap and returns the result. The text contains:
It contains no coordinates, no install ID and no contact details. My coaching service does not store it. OpenAI processes it under its API terms, which do not allow it to be used to train their models. This only happens for recaps you are entitled to: free recaps and Pro. A locked recap sends nothing.
Handled by Apple and RevenueCat
Pace Coach Pro is an auto-renewable subscription. Apple processes the payment, and I never see your payment details. RevenueCat verifies whether you have Pro. It receives an anonymous ID it creates for the app and the transaction details Apple provides, never your name or card. See RevenueCat's privacy policy.
Pace Coach is not designed for children and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. It collects no names, contact details or other information that identifies a person.
If what Pace Coach collects changes, I will update this page and the date at the top before the app update that makes the change is released.
